A Historic Moment: The World Welcomes Pope Leo XIV, the First American-Born Pontiff

Vatican City — May 8, 2025

In a moment steeped in tradition and hope, the Roman Catholic Church ushered in a new era today as white smoke rose above the Sistine Chapel, signaling the election of a new pope. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, an American-born bishop with deep roots in Latin America, has been elected as the 268th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election marks a historic first: he is the first American-born pontiff in the nearly 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.

Millions around the world watched with joy and reverence as the announcement was made from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, following the conclusion of the 2025 Papal Conclave. The College of Cardinals chose Cardinal Prevost after he secured the necessary two-thirds majority vote, following the death of Pope Francis in March.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, and later naturalized as a citizen of Peru, Pope Leo XIV is widely known for his decades of service to the poor in one of Peru’s most impoverished regions. For over 20 years, he ministered to marginalized communities, earning a reputation as a humble shepherd of the people and an advocate for social justice.

His pastoral priorities are clear: faith over bureaucracy, unity over division, and mercy over judgment. Like his predecessor Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV is expected to continue championing causes such as environmental stewardship, interfaith dialogue, and care for the poor and displaced. His consistent message of compassion, equality, and peace has resonated across continents, signaling a continuity of the inclusive vision set forth by Pope Francis.

Both pontiffs have not shied away from addressing contemporary political challenges. They have voiced concern over rising nationalism, environmental neglect, and policies that alienate the vulnerable—particularly migrants and refugees. In past statements, both have been critical of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, citing a moral imperative to “welcome the stranger.”

In a gesture of civility, President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance issued public congratulations to the new pope via social media, expressing hope for a continued relationship between the United States and the Holy See.

In his first public remarks as pope, Leo XIV called upon the global community to “build bridges, not walls,” urging all people to embrace a spirit of peace, compassion, and unity. “We are all children of God,” he said, “and we must find the courage to be one people—always, in peace.”

As crowds continue to gather in Vatican City and churches around the world ring their bells in celebration, Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy at a time of profound global transformation. His leadership will be closely watched as he seeks to guide the Church through the complexities of the modern world with a heart rooted in humility and hope.
